23RD LOCAL JAMBOREE
(Marlon D. Macapas)
The 23rd Local Jamboree (City Encampment 2018) was held at the Eco Park of Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, Gabaldon Campus last January 17 – 19, 2018. The Jamboree was attended by different elementary and secondary campers both from public and private schools.
The jamboree aims to provide an environment of learning, safe and enjoyable to enhance their physical, social, mental, emotional, and spiritual potentials. By the end of the jamboree the scouts would be able to:
- Promote local solidarity and understanding;
- Undertake community service activities and community immersion projects through the World Scout Environment Education Program (WSEEP); appreciation of nature through the Scouts-Go-Solar, and promotion of peace among their fellow scouts and their leaders and the community through the Messenger of Peace initiatives.
- Undergo activities that will enable them to complete requirements of selected merit badges of both Boy Scout and Senior Scout advancement;
- Develop skills and capacities through team building activities, games, group dynamics, creativity, character building and critical thinking through problem solving.
January 17, 2018 (DAY 1)
Prior to departure, the campers were given a short orientation by Sir Christoper S. Fajardo (Boy Scout Coordinator) and Ma’am Imelda D. Sison (School Principal). The campers left the school at around 4:00 in the afternoon and arrived at the venue at 6:00 PM.
The campers arrived late to the scheduled opening program due to bad weather, and that was the mere reason why the campers had prepared the campsite quite late. The day ended with a late dinner.
January 18, 2018 (DAY 2)
The day started with a morning run by all campers. It was also the first activity that the campers had joined.
After the run, the campers again assembled in the venue for the next activity which was the “Water Survival” Activity. The campers were taught on how to survive, swim and breath properly in the water and how to use different rescue materials.They were also taught on how to ride on a rescue boat. Gerald Ranalan, one of CEVMHS campers were commended for being a good swimmer and demonstrator to co-campers the proper way to rescue a drowning individual.
At exactly 1:30 pm, the campers were asked to proceed on the school open gym for the Self-Defense training activity. The campers learned the basic arnis, taekwondo, and boxing skills.
January 19, 2018 (DAY 3)
The campers woke-up early to prepare for the campsite inspection.
Right after the campsite inspection, the campers took the Rapelling Activity. Sir Noel Londerio, served as the trainer for familiarization, proper installation, and utilization of rapelling equipment. He also taught the campers how to do proper rapelling. The campers were given the chance to experience to climb down on a hill using their learnings on rapelling. The campers were led back by their troop leader to the campsite to have their lunch.
In the afternoon, the campers followed the trail tracks going to the Eco Park famous water fall. But a weak rain came, and the campers were no longer permitted to reach the place. Instead, they were just allowed to have a short swim with one of the park’s waterway. The campers, though tired of a quite long walk, they had so much fun of the experience to see and experience the gift of nature.
At 6:00 in the evening, last night of the jamboree, all campers were assembled on the university open ground for the ceremonial lighting of camp fire. Afterwards was the patrol yell competition and presentation of different awards. The program ended at around 12:00 midnight.
January 20, 2018 (DAY 4)
After having breakfast, the campers prepared to go home. The 23rd local jamboree ended with heart-filled with joy, learning, satisfaction, a bit of sadness (specially to those graduating campers), and eager souls that next year they will again join the jamboree.
